Always protect your computer, and it's files if you're on the web! You never know what's lurking out there in all the digital files you download. The majority of net users will probably never come across a real virus, but as they say, it's better to be safe than sorry.
GRISOFT AVG FREE 7
Our current favorite anti-virus program for Windows.
AVG does a great job of protecting your system and it has even caught a few things on our system that other commercial products have missed.
Grisoft also has a pay-version that sells for around $30 dollars, if you'd like a few extra features. However, both versions have constant virus definition updates so the free version is good enough for most users.
AVAST! 4 HOME EDITION
avast! Home Edition is a complete anti-virus package, that is is free for registered home non-commercial users. You ll download a 90 days demo, if you would like to continue free usage beyond that time, you ll need to register from the home page to obtain a free activation key by email.
TREND MICRO HOUSECALL
Don't want to install anti-virus software? Try scanning your system for viruses online! A few online virus scanning services have popped up, but the best we've seen is House Call, by Trend Micro. This service will check your system, and clean infections for free. You'll need Internet Explorer to use this one.
PC PIT STOP
Another great site that will scan your system for viruses. While you're there, get the rest of your PC checked! This site will test the health of your hard drive, your memory, internet connection, security and more. After the tests are done, it'll tell you what passed, what failed and how to fix it. PC Pitstop runs on "ActiveX" technology, found only in the Internet Explorer browser.
ZONEALARM
Everyone on the internet should be running a firewall program, especially broadband users. ZoneAlarm is the most popular out there, and will alert you if a program is trying to connect to the internet or someone is trying to connect to you without permission. Highly recommended.
